The Society for Queer Asian Studies (SQAS) plans to sponsor a panel at the AAS-in-Asia conference 2018 Annual Conference,5–8 July, 2018, at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, India. Our internal deadline is Thurs., Nov. 1, 2018.
The governing board of SQAS is seeking complete panel proposals on themes related to queer Asian studies. We are particularly interested in sponsoring panels that involve two or more of our focus regions (China and Inner Asia, Northeast Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia), and that address connections and divergences between regions or broader transnational issues in the field.
Possible Panel Topics
Possible focuses might include (but are not limited to):
—Knowledge production and circulation in the field of queer Asian studies
—The contributions of queer studies and queer Asian studies specifically to the broader field of Asian studies
—Queer activist and/or academic interaction between regions
—Queer cultural appropriation across borders within and beyond Asia
—Queer politics in Asia in the current (geo)political climate
—The uses of the media and popular culture as tools to limit or liberate queer peoples and cultures
—“Queer kinship” and family forms that differ from normative family structures in local and regional contexts
—The politics of gender and sexual “difference” in Asia vis-à-vis the relationship between local conditions and global discourse
—Embodiment and the health of queer populations
Seeking Fellow Panelists
Those interested in forming a panel on queer Asian studies in response to this CFP or to propose directly to AAS should feel free to make a new post on our Facebook page and/or use our email list (details below) to find other panelists, including chairs and discussants. Note that there is overlap between Facebook and our email list but the lists are not the same so we recommend you use both. (If you are unable to access the Facebook group, please contact us to post a message for you.)
To support a diversity of scholars, in principle, the selection committee will give preference to panels primarily composed of individuals who have not recently been on a SQAS-sponsored panel.
Please note that while the SQAS board will be reviewing the panel abstracts for our internal selection, AAS panel review committee members have much more diverse interests. To increase the likelihood of both SQAS choosing and AAS accepting your panel, prepare your proposals with a very broad Asian studies audience in mind (not just queer scholars).
Panel proposals MUST meet the requirements of AAS-in-Asia as noted in the official conference CFP. Panel organizers should pay particular attention to Section II, “Important Submission Guidelines,” Section III, "Panel Selection Criteria," and Section X, "Types of Proposals."
SQAS sponsorship only confers our endorsement of the panel and does not guarantee that a panel will be accepted by conference organizers.
We are unable to offer travel funds to attend the conference. A limited amount of funding may be available through AAS for students and for scholars who are citizens of and work in the less economically advanced nations of Asia. Refer to Section VIII, "Travel Assistance," in the conference CFP linked to above.
Complete panel proposals must be submitted to our email address by Thurs., Nov. 1, 2017. Questions may also be sent to that address. Proposals will be reviewed by the SQAS governing board.
We plan to announce the selected panels as well as provide feedback on all panel proposals in time to allow all submitters time to revise proposals by the AAS deadline of November 15, 5:00 pm American Eastern Standard Time.
We hope to see lots of queer papers and panels in Delhi!
